Top Ten Suggestions On Pitching National Media

  1. Look for the "story" element: identify the characters, plot, and conflict.
  2. Look at how your pitch fits into a broader, national trend or angle.
  3. Back up your pitch with quantitative data or your client's analysis or expertise on a related issue.
  4. Offer national reporters a fresh idea or a new spokesperson tied to an old idea.
  5. Offer exclusive or pre-embargo access to your story.
  6. Keep pitches concise - use bullets to highlight important key points you want to stress, and don't use overly wordy language to get your message across.
  7. Reporters face tight deadlines, so call them in the morning (before 10 a.m. MT). And, use targeted, personalized emails to reach reporters, not follow-up calls.
  8. Invite writers to spend time with your client, for background briefings or "get to know you" lunches.
  9. Try calling the assignment desk when dealing with breaking news.
  10. Above all, if you believe in the story, don't give up!
